Upper Kenton House
Berkshire
PROJECT TYPE: Principal Contractor
ARCHITECTURE: Anderson Orr
OVERVIEW: Located in a charming Berkshire countryside hamlet, this replacement farmhouse draws from the local vernacular. The essence of the property is directly informed by its agricultural and equestrian context, but with the addition of a statement, contemporary architectural twist. Traditional materiality of clay tile, red brick and oak boarding are counterposed with painted brick and Crittall glazing, bringing a fresh perspective to the traditional forms and composition.
Acquired with an existing, but unsuitable, approval for a replacement property (secured prior to Anderson Orr’s involvement), a full redesign commenced. The brief was to reimagine the original concept and align the property with the client's vision for a contemporary yet traditionally styled home. Spanning four storeys this carefully thought-out transformation includes a multiuse basement level. Outbuildings, featuring horizontal timber boarding and natural slate roofs, further enhance the cohesive aesthetic of this meticulously crafted countryside retreat.
A holistic approach to the property’s design and construction ensures a seamless blend of modern living and traditional craftsmanship, creating a residence that harmonises effortlessly with its picturesque surroundings. The integration of extensive glazing optimises natural light and indoor-outdoor connectivity, showcasing the carefully redesigned grounds and offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
Underpinned by sustainable infrastructure, and designed to optimise energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, Upper Kenton House is built to last. Deep insulation and integral heat loss prevention measures, air source heating and rainwater harvesting systems contribute to the property’s overall performance and ecological footprint.
