Heritage Restoration

Barr Build are dedicated to the sympathetic repair, conservation, enhancement and extension of listed historic buildings, whether great or small.

Overview

With extensive experience in historic buildings restoration, working under the guidance of specialist conservation consultants and some of our countries most eminent historic architects, traditional craftmanship and ongoing specialist training is paired with a strong combined knowledge base across our highly experienced team.

Each Barr Build heritage project is approached with deference to the building and in close collaboration with the property's custodians and specialist professional partners. Extensive training and experience in heritage conservation construction enable a meticulously planned and considered response to each challenge.

In Focus

The capability of our highly trained heritage restoration team is enhanced by long-established partnerships with historic buildings experts, allowing large-scale heritage projects to run alongside smaller Listed property interventions.

Trusted partnerships with master trades, including specialist stone masons, hand-forged metal workers, lead roofing experts, heritage decorative plasterers and artisan finishers of every specialty,  enable a broad heritage build capability and the highest standards, whilst retaining the adaptability required to ensure the appropriate individualisation of each heritage build programme.

“I often feel the term "craftsmen" is somewhat bereft of its true value in the modern era. However, to my mind, the (Barr Build) team really do justice to the great tradition of craftsmanship in demonstrating what can be achieved with skill, expertise and great ability. Superb!”

Heritage approved extension and modification

At Barr Build we see the considered extension and modification of a Listed residence as a means of celebrating its historic fabric and structure, whilst securing its future.

Barr Build's project teams have strong knowledge and experience of working under Listed buildings consents, using carefully specified bridging methods, including glazed links and other structural or material delineations, to protect the integrity of the property.

Energy efficiency and retrofit for

Historic buildings

The deployment of traditional heritage restoration techniques, such as the removal of detrimental, inappropriate retrofitted materials and replacement with heritage-approved alternatives (including limecrete floors, natural fibre insulation and lime plasterwork) has been a cornerstone of the Barr Build offering for over two decades.

Once a balance of breathability and airtightness is achieved, low-carbon technology can be deployed, making comfortable, modern living possible, whatever the properties' listing or heritage.
