Torban Hall

Buckinghamshire

ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN: Jane Duncan Architects + Interiors

OVERVIEW: Situated within the Chiltern Hills, this Victorian Italianate villa has a rich history, together with links to royalty. The property was once part of a much larger estate that has since been subdivided, with the barns and outbuildings now converted into separate dwellings. Barr Group principal contractor works for Torban Hall involved the extensive two-phase remodelling, extension and renovation of the main house and the creation of a detached poolhouse and leisure suite. A newly formed library, wine cellar, games room and home cinema featured in the overall scope.

MAIN HOUSE: Works began with the complete remodelling of the central section of the ground floor to achieve a large, single-level, open-plan family kitchen, dining and living space, with expansive fine-line architectural glazing leading to the main south-facing terrace and landscaped gardens beyond. The rest of the property was renovated, including restoration of period features and bespoke cabinetry throughout.

POOLHOUSE & LEISURE SUITE: Phase II works at Torban Hall involved the construction of a 200-sq-metre detached pool house and leisure suite, designed to complement the grandeur of the original house while blending into its natural surroundings. The structure, including two fully glazed faces, is supported by a steel frame and exposed white galvanised steel posts. Italian stone tiles transition seamlessly into a sprung timber floor of the adjoining gym, with a separate laundry and a built-in kitchenette.
