OVERVIEW: The Hedgerow House project involved the extensive internal and external remodelling, retrofit and refurbishment of an existing 1980s property. Retaining a large portion of the existing footprint and structure, the design objective was to create more space, better flow and function and low-carbon longevity. Set on the edge of a rural Oxfordshire village, the architectural and landscaping scheme also needed to blend the detached property and its substantial plot with the surrounding green belt countryside.
To the front of the property, an extended roofline incorporating a bespoke rooflight creates a double-height entrance hall. To the rear of the property, the original central gable was drawn out and elongated, elegantly extending the property’s footprint to create a large open-plan kitchen living space below and a main bedroom suite with a full-width balcony above. The aesthetic of the property is aligned through its materials pallet of contemporary slate roof tiles, aluminium-framed glazing and timber cladding, which sit against white rendered walls. Inside, Crittall-style partitioning, a double-sided glazed fireplace and a statement curved oak staircase provide the backdrop for a carefully curated interior scheme.
Outside, an annexed garden room in a matched materials pallet connects the house and garden. Carefully planned hard and soft landscaping blends and softens the scheme, bridging between property and the greenbelt countryside beyond.
