Church Farm
Oxfordshire
ARCHITECTURE: TAMA Studio
QUANTITY SURVEYING: Walker Associates Chartered Quantity Surveyors
OVERVIEW: A modern farmhouse, built for longevity and to maximise the views across the neighbouring Berkshire Downs. The new dwelling is built around a series of courtyards on a footprint which mirrors that of the farmyard’s original barn structures. A two-storey section of the property blends with the rest of the dwelling and remains subservient to its namesake 15th-century village church by means of an asymmetric, dipped roofline.
The easterly two-storey stone section houses bedroom suites, a library and a lower-level living room, cleverly sunk into the surrounding landscape. Living accommodation – including an expansive glazed kitchen-dining space with a walk-in larder and cold room – as well as a study, store rooms, a large utility/dog room and garaging, are arranged around a series of courtyards to the centre, rear and west entrance sides of the property.
The materials palette, strongly influenced by traditional farmyards in the locality, includes Cotswold stone, clay tiles and oak cladding, all chosen for their gentle ageing and ability to stand the test of time.
