Grand Designs Live 2025
Architect and contractor in conversation

At Grand Designs Live 2025, Stuart Barr and architect Scott Ellis of Atelier Ellis shared insights in two engaging sessions focused on the foundations of successful construction.
At Grand Designs Live 2025, Stuart Barr joined forces with architect Scott Ellis of Atelier Ellis for two thought-provoking sessions on what it really takes to set a construction project up for success. Hosted by industry leaders Kevin McCloud and Kunle Barker, the discussions offered practical advice and behind-the-scenes insight for homeowners navigating the design and build process.
Held in partnership with RIBA and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the two panels were designed to strip away the mystery surrounding the construction process. The goal was to empower attendees with the knowledge to make informed decisions and build with confidence.

In the session titled “Architect and Contractor in Conversation: Appointing Your Team,” chaired by Kevin McCloud, Stuart Barr and Scott Ellis took to the stage to explore the importance of assembling the right team. They discussed how shared values, clear communication, and mutual respect between architect and contractor are essential for creating a cohesive and high-functioning project environment.
Earlier in the day, “Setting Up Your Project for Success,” chaired by the insightful Kunle Barker, addressed the crucial early phases of any build. The panel broke down the steps homeowners should take before breaking ground – from defining expectations and scope, to ensuring alignment across all parties involved.

Both sessions made it clear that success in construction isn’t just about technical skill – it’s about relationships. When architect, contractor, and client collaborate effectively from the outset, the potential for stress is reduced, surprises are minimised, and creativity can thrive.
We’re grateful to Kevin McCloud, Kunle Barker, and our collaborators at Atelier Ellis for helping to bring these conversations to life, and to everyone in the audience who brought their curiosity and enthusiasm. Special thanks to photographer Genevieve Girling for capturing the spirit of the day.
